Union Street Lanes
Union Street Lanes is located in Holbrook, MA with 16 lanes of candlepin bowling. For those of you not from around here, you're in for a surprise. First of all, the balls have no holes, which is a good thing, because they are only the size of a softball. There are still 10 pins, but they are tall and skinny, and much harder to hit than those of ten pin, or big ball bowling. On the plus side, you get three tries instead of two to knock them all down. So, if you haven't seen this type of bowling yet, stop in; its fun, and the smaller balls make it easier for kids to participate. If you are from around here, you know what this is all about and probably stopped reading a while ago.
Union Street Lanes began in Sept 2008 as a bet/dare between cousins. We wondered if we could take the closed, 1960's, Wright Brother's Sports Center and remake it into someplace we would want to hang out, while maintaining its "nostalgia" (ie, the vintage 1960's feel) that kept league bowlers coming back year after year. Year 1 we kept the nostalgia, fixed the machines, re-surfaced the lanes, and tried to stop the roof from leaking. Year 2 we updated the nostalgia (cleaned & painted) and stopped (fingers crossed) the roof from leaking. This year we added a bar, Keno, flat screen TVs, burgers, pizza, nachos, pool, shuffle board, and the NFL Sunday ticket. It's still a work in progress, but we are getting there, and we won't stop trying to improve.
We think we've made a pretty nice place here, something that will appeal to almost everyone. A dad looking for a place to watch the game while taking the kids out of his wife's hair for the afternoon; Seniors having free coffee and doughnuts midweek with their friends...and bowling a little too; A Saturday afternoon outing for the whole family...for less than $20; A place where old HS friends can get together, catch up, and.....actually do something besides just sit at the bar and drink. (not that there's anything wrong with that)
So, to recap
- 16 lanes of Candlepin Bowling
- Bar / Food
- HD TVs
- Shuffle board
- Kids Birthday Parties
- Adult Parties
- Free Coffee & Cookies Mid-week
Just come in and ask for Steve. (Most of the people that work here are named Steve. The one that isn't has a chinchilla named Steve. True story.)
